Polaris Recalls 900 Fusion and RMK Snowmobiles for Fire and Drive Shaft Risks
Polaris is recalling about 2,580 model year 2005 snowmobiles because fuel connections may leak, causing fire, or drive shafts may fail, causing loss of braking.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves risk-of-harm products (fire and loss of braking) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Polaris Industries, Inc. is recalling about 2,580 model year 2005 "900 Fusion" and "900 RMK 151" snowmobiles. The recall involves vehicles with model numbers S05MP8DS(A)(B)(C) and S05PL8DSA, which were sold nationwide by Polaris dealers from June 30, 2004, to October 7, 2004, for between $9,499 and $10,299.
The recall is due to two potential defects. First, the fuel connections between the fuel line and the fuel pump and fuel filter can leak. This failure can result in leaking fuel and a possible fire, which can cause severe injury or death. Second, the drive shaft may have been incorrectly heat treated, making it brittle. This can cause the drive shaft to fail at lower loads than designed, resulting in a loss of braking and potential severe injury or death.
There have been no incidents or injuries reported. Consumers should contact their Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair to install fuel line connection clamps and a replacement drive shaft. Polaris has also notified consumers directly. For more information, call Polaris at (800) 765-2747 or visit www.polarisindustries.com.
