Kadant Composites Inc. is recalling approximately 11,000 constructed decks made with GeoDeck™ decking and railing materials. The composite decking, which resembles natural wood and was sold in driftwood, cedar, and mahogany colors, was manufactured between April 2002 and October 2003. The materials were sold at retail lumberyards nationwide from April 2002 through July 2005 for between $2 and $2.50 per linear foot.

The recall is due to a hazard where the decking or railing material can prematurely degrade when exposed to hot temperatures and sunlight. This degradation can cause the material to break, posing a fall hazard to consumers. Kadant Composites has received about 370 reports of accelerated degradation, but no injuries have been reported.

Because the manufacturer is out of business, a remedy is no longer available. Consumers should check their GeoDeck™ materials for visible surface cracks and test if the surface can be easily scratched with a fingernail or the corner of a credit card. Consumers will need to arrange for repairs themselves.
