What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 3/5 (High).
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect that can cause the bench to collapse and result in injury, but the source explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Nautilus Inc. is recalling approximately 10,000 Nautilus NT 1020 exercise benches. The recall is due to a defect where a weld on the bench frame, located under the seat, can crack and separate from the main frame. This failure allows the bench to collapse, posing a risk of the user falling and suffering injuries.
The affected benches are free-standing units typically used for free weight workouts. They feature a white steel base with wheels and a black vinyl bench and back support. The fronts of the base and back support are stamped with the name "Nautilus." A tag on the reverse side of the back support reads "Distributed by Nautilus/Schwinn Fitness Group Inc." and "Made in China." Affected units have Production Date Codes from 2002 ranging from 1952 to 3652, or from 2003 ranging from 0013 to 1903. White benches without a Production Date Code sticker are also included in the recall.
The benches were sold at specialty health and fitness stores nationwide from November 2000 through January 2004 for between $300 and $400. Nautilus has received four reports of the main pivot separating from the main frame, but no injuries have been reported. Consumers should stop using these exercise benches immediately and contact Nautilus to receive a free repair kit.
