The recall is due to a design defect that allows the furnaces to overheat, which can cause heat-exchanger cracking, burn-through, and in extreme cases, furnace wrapper burn-through. This overheating can lead to the heating and burning of adjacent drywall and other combustibles, posing a fire and smoke hazard. UPG has received 27 reports of fires, some resulting in extensive property damage, but no injuries have been reported.
