Plain-English summary

Turbo Power Inc. of Flushing, New York, is recalling approximately 395,000 electric hand-held hair dryers. The recalled models include the Turbo 1500, Twin Turbo 2600, Turbo 2800 Silverado, Twin Turbo 2800, Mega Turbo 2500, Twin Turbo Ionic 3000, Parlux 3000, Mega Turbo 3000, Coldmatic 1500, Turbo Millennium 2000, Turbo 2200, and Super Turbo 1900. These hair dryers feature pistol grips and plastic casings in black, black and red, black and gray, or red and ivory. They are equipped with two-prong power cords and are labeled with "Turbo Power" or "PIBBS" followed by the model number and the voltage marking "110V/60HZ." The packaging indicated the products were made in Italy.

The recall is being issued because these hair dryers are not equipped with an immersion protection device. This safety feature is required by industry standards to prevent electrocution if the hair dryer falls into water. The absence of this device creates a risk of electric shock. No injuries have been reported in connection with these hair dryers.

The affected hair dryers were sold at retail and beauty supply stores nationwide from January 2002 through April 2004 for approximately $50 to $169. Consumers should stop using the recalled hair dryers immediately. To obtain a remedy, consumers can return the hair dryer to the retail store where it was purchased or mail it to Turbo Power Inc. at 31-40 Downing Street, Flushing, NY 11354, for a free replacement. Turbo Power will reimburse consumers for shipping costs. For more information, consumers can call Turbo Power at (888) 715-6100 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.turbopowerinc.com.
