Murray, Inc. is recalling about 8,000 lawn mowers, lawn tractors, and garden tractors. The recall includes specific 20-, 21-, and 22-inch walk-behind mowers; 30-inch mid-engine riding mowers; 38-, 40-, 42-, and 46-inch lawn tractors; and 46-inch garden tractors. The affected units are red, black, or gray and feature the "Murray" name on the body. Specific model numbers are listed on the unit's nameplate, located under the seat for tractors and at the rear of the housing for walk-behind mowers.
The recall is due to a hazard where plastic components on the mowers and tractors can crack if struck by an object thrown from the blade. This can cause objects to be ejected unexpectedly, potentially hitting nearby consumers. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The products were sold at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Northern Tool nationwide from November 2003 through February 2004. Walk-behind mowers sold for between $99 and $368, while riding mowers sold for between $758 and $1,748. Because Murray, Inc. is out of business, no remedy is available.
