Kohl's Recalls Children's Fleece Pant Sets Due to Choking Hazard

Kohl's is recalling about 9,600 children's fleece pant sets because small fabric pieces can tear off and pose a choking hazard to young children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard for young children with a reported incident of a child beginning to choke, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported as severe or fatal.

Plain-English summary

Kohl's Department Stores Inc. is recalling approximately 9,600 units of First Moments- or Second Step-brand children's fleece pant sets. The recall involves two-piece sets containing a pink fleece top with patch pockets and cotton pants with a pink floral print, sold in sizes 3 months to 24 months. The sets were sold nationwide from September 2002 through early November 2002 for about $18.

The recall was issued because the cut-out floral pattern on the sleeves, hem, and pockets of the tops weakens the fabric, allowing small pieces to tear off easily. These torn pieces pose a choking hazard. Kohl's has received two reports of young children putting torn fabric pieces in their mouths, with one child reportedly beginning to choke on a piece of material.

Consumers should stop using the recalled sets immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, consumers can call Kohl's toll-free at (800) 694-2647 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.Kohls.com.
