LPK International Recalls Barstools Due to Collapse Risk

LPK International is recalling about 1,900 barstools because the legs may detach from the seat, posing a risk of injury. Consumers should stop using them and return them to Shopko for a refund.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect where the product can collapse, posing a risk of injury. One report of a back injury was received, but no fatalities or severe injuries requiring hospitalization are reported, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has been reported but is not severe.

Plain-English summary

LPK International Inc. is recalling approximately 1,900 barstools due to a structural defect. The dowels connecting the legs to the seat are not properly secured, which can cause the barstools to collapse during use. This collapse poses a risk of injury to consumers.

The recalled products are 24-inch and 29-inch high barstools with a natural wood finish and round seats. The specific model numbers are 74150 (24-inch) and 75151 (29-inch), which are printed on a sticker on the underside of the seat. A circular stamp on the underside also reads "H.L." and "NOV 2001." The barstools were assembled in the United States.

Shopko Stores sold these barstools in the central and northwest U.S. from January 2002 through March 2002 for about $20 each. LPK has received six reports of the barstools collapsing. One consumer reported injuring his back when his barstool collapsed and he fell to the ground.

Consumers should stop using these recalled barstools immediately and return them to the nearest Shopko store for a refund.
