Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. is recalling approximately 140,000 cordless electric lawn mowers sold under the Black & Decker and Craftsman brand names. The recall is due to a defect where an electrical component in the mower can overheat, creating a possible fire hazard.
The affected Black & Decker mowers have model numbers CMM1000 or CMM1000R and date codes from 9534 through 200230. These mowers were sold at home centers, hardware, and discount stores nationwide from February 1996 through August 2002 for between $360 and $400. The affected Craftsman mowers have model number 900.370520 and were sold at Sears stores nationwide from January 1998 through December 2000 for between $360 and $400.
Black & Decker has received 11 reports of electrical components overheating. One incident resulted in a minor hand burn, and nine resulted in minor property damage extending beyond the mower. Consumers should stop using the recalled mowers immediately. Black & Decker owners should call toll-free at (866) 229-5570 for a free repair, while Craftsman owners should take the mower to a Sears store or product repair center for a free repair.
