What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the blade control device may fail, posing a risk of serious injury, but no injuries have been reported.

Plain-English summary

Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. is recalling approximately 1,300 reconditioned Black & Decker Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers. The recalled units have an orange deck and a charcoal black motor cover. The model number is CMM1000R, and the date codes range from 0043 M.N.D.C. to 0121 M.N.D.C., located on a silver and black label on the rear door of the mower. The words "Black & Decker" and "Cordless" appear on top of the motor cover.

The recall is being conducted because the clips holding the control cable to the handle may be missing. This defect could cause the blade control device to fail, keeping the mower blade running when it should stop. If the blade control device fails, consumers could suffer serious injuries. Black & Decker has not received any reports of injuries with these lawn mowers; the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.

The affected lawn mowers were sold at Black & Decker factory stores nationwide from December 2000 through May 2001 for between $145 and $290. Lawn mowers sold at locations other than Black & Decker factory stores are not included in this recall. Consumers should stop using these lawn mowers immediately and take them to a Black & Decker service center for a free repair. For more information or to locate the nearest service center, consumers can call Black & Decker toll-free at (866) 229-5570 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or log on to the company's website at www.blackanddecker.com.
