Arctic Cat Recalls 2002 ATVs Due to Brake Fluid Leak Risk
Arctic Cat is recalling about 45,000 2002 ATVs because a pressure switch leak can cause brake failure, posing a risk of serious injury or death.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake failure) with reported injuries, including a dislocated shoulder, which meets the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Arctic Cat Inc. is recalling approximately 45,000 2002 model all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States. The affected models include the 250, 300, 300 Massey Ferguson, 375, 400, 400i, 500, TBX 500, and 500i. These vehicles were sold nationwide by Arctic Cat ATV dealers from July 2001 through December 2001 for between $4,200 and $6,400. The recalled ATVs are either red or green and feature the "Arctic Cat" brand name on both sides of the vehicle.
The recall is necessary because the pressure switch in the braking system may leak fluid. This unexpected loss of fluid can cause the brakes to fail, posing a risk of serious injury or death. Arctic Cat has received four reports of problems with the pressure switches, including one consumer who suffered a dislocated shoulder and another who suffered bumps and bruises.
Consumers should contact Arctic Cat to determine if their ATV is part of the recall. They should have the ATV's model name and 13-digit model number available when calling. The model name is located on the front of the ATV, just below the speedometer, while the model number is included in the registration materials received at purchase. Consumers with a recalled ATV should contact their local Arctic Cat ATV dealer to schedule a free repair. Arctic Cat can be reached toll-free at (800) 279-6851 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or via the company's website.
