Profile-Design LLC, of Long Beach, California, is recalling approximately 8,400 units of "Carbon X" and "Carbon Stryke" bicycle aero bars. These handlebar extensions allow riders to assume an aerodynamic crouching position. The Carbon X is a complete handlebar and stem system, while the Carbon Stryke attaches to existing handlebars. Both models are black and feature "Profile Design" branding. Aero bar ZB brackets that are welded together or have a spring-loaded flip-up design are not included in this recall.

The recall is due to a defect where the brackets attaching the forearm pads can loosen or separate during use. This failure can cause the rider to lose control of the bicycle and crash. Profile-Design has received one report of a bracket loosening, resulting in a rider crashing and suffering a broken rib and abrasions.

The recalled Carbon X aero bars were sold from August 1999 through November 2001 for about $349. The Carbon Stryke aero bars were sold from May 1999 through November 2001 for about $139. The products were sold at independent bicycle stores worldwide. Consumers should stop using the recalled aero bars immediately and contact Profile-Design at (888) 800-5999 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.profile-design.com to receive two free replacement brackets.
