Plain-English summary
The Sharper Image Corp. is recalling approximately 1,000 units of the Power Tower motorized CD rack, model number SI693. The recall affects only units with codes REV A or REV B located under the base. The product is a black, 3-foot high rack that holds 100 CDs and rotates automatically.
The hazard exists because the batteries in the unit can leak or explode when used with an AC adapter. Consumers may suffer burns from leaking battery fluid or be struck by pieces of an exploding battery. CPSC and The Sharper Image have received one report of a battery exploding, but no injuries have been reported.
The Sharper Image sold these racks in stores, catalogs, and on the internet during August 2000 for about $160. Consumers should immediately remove the batteries from the CD racks and contact The Sharper Image for a replacement unit or a refund. Those who return the units or arrange for shipping will receive a $50 merchandise certificate for their next purchase.
