Plain-English summary
Coby Electronics Corp. is recalling about 13,800 Coby-brand USB/MP3/CD digital boomboxes. The recalled units are portable CD/MP3 players with AM/FM radio and USB connectivity, primarily white with silver-colored speakers. The model number MP-CD475 is written on the top, and the word "COBY" is on the front. The recall covers units with specific serial numbers located on the rear of the unit beneath the AC power cord plug-in outlet.
The boomboxes pose a fire hazard because they can overheat when left plugged into an electrical outlet and the off switch is not firmly in place. Coby Electronics has received 18 reports of the boomboxes overheating, resulting in three reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled boomboxes were sold at discount, toy, and office supply stores nationwide from August 2006 through December 2006 for between $20 and $50. Consumers should unplug these boomboxes immediately and contact Coby Electronics Corp. for information on returning the recalled units and receiving a refund.
