What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (cuts requiring stitches), fitting the High severity criteria for products with reported injuries but no fatalities or severe structural defects.
Plain-English summary
NIKE USA Inc. is recalling approximately 425,000 pairs of Jordan Trunner cross-training shoes, including the Trunner, Trunner Mid, Trunner Bubble, and Trunner 2000 models. The recall was initiated because the shoes feature a thin metal strip on the outside of the heel that can protrude from the shoe, forming a sharp edge capable of cutting consumers.
NIKE has received six reports of the metal strip protruding from the Bubble model, including five cuts to the lower leg that required stitches. One additional injury report was received for the Trunner model. No injury reports were received for the Trunner Mid or Trunner 2000 models, but these are included in the recall to prevent the possibility of injury.
These shoes were sold at major athletic shoe and department stores nationwide from July 1999 through July 2001 for between $90 and $125. Consumers should stop using these shoes immediately and contact NIKE toll-free at (800) 344-6453 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or log on to www.nikebiz.com to receive free replacement shoes.
