The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and five firms are recalling approximately 50,500 backpack blowers. The affected models are manufactured by Husqvarna Forest & Garden Co., John Deere Consumer Products Inc., Makita U.S.A. Inc., Carswell Import & Marketing Associates Inc., and Tilton Equipment Co.
The fuel tanks on these blowers can leak, which poses a fire hazard and a risk of burn injuries to consumers. The manufacturers have received reports of leaking fuel tanks, with Husqvarna reporting 159 incidents, Makita U.S.A. reporting 55, and John Deere reporting five. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
The blowers were sold nationwide at home centers, hardware stores, and manufacturer dealers for between $400 and $750. Consumers should stop using the recalled blowers immediately and contact the manufacturer to have the blower repaired free of charge.
