The Gymboree Corp. of Burlingame, California, is voluntarily recalling approximately 19,000 plush shape sorter toys and 12,000 plush stacking toys. The recall is necessary because the stuffing of these toys can contain sewing needles and sharp metal pieces. Young children could ingest these parts or be cut by them. The shape sorter toys are multi-colored plush boxes with six shapes that rattle, crackle, or squeak, featuring patterns such as green with blue polka-dots, red and orange checks, and blue and green stripes. The stacking toys consist of four multi-colored shapes (circle, square, triangle, and star) that graduate from large to small, also with rattle, crackle, or squeak features. Both product types bear labels reading "GYMBOREE" and "Made In China."
The company discovered the hazard after one report of a part of a sewing needle in the stuffing of a plush shape sorter toy. Following an inventory search, the firm identified five additional plush shape sorter toys with sharp metal pieces. No injuries have been reported to date.
These toys were sold nationwide at Gymboree and Play & Music Stores, and on the Gymboree website, from November 1998 through April 2000 for about $20. Consumers should stop using the toys immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
