Undercooked Chicken in Ready-to-Eat Products Recalled Nationwide
USDA FSIS issued a public health alert for ready-to-eat chicken products that may be undercooked and incorporated into other foods. Consumers are urged not to consume these items.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a high-risk pathogen (Salmonella) associated with undercooked poultry, but the source explicitly states there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions, fitting the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is alerting consumers that ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken products produced by National Steak and Poultry in Owasso, Oklahoma, may have been undercooked. These recalled chicken products were subsequently used as ingredients in other FSIS-regulated products by four establishments: Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc. in Portland, Oregon; Aryzta LLC in Romeoville, Illinois; Nation Pizza Products Limited in Schaumburg, Illinois; and Southwest Products LLC in San Diego, California. The secondary products were produced before the original undercooking issue was identified.
The affected products include Ajinomoto brand Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice, Archer Farms brand pizza products containing chicken, Ferratto's brand chicken pizza product, Best Choice brand chicken pizza product, Nuevo Grille brand chicken quesadilla product, and Schwan's brand chicken quesadilla product. These items bear establishment numbers P-18356, P-2539B, P-1682A, and P-17417 inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to warehouses, distributors, and retail locations nationwide. The original issue was discovered on November 14, 2016, when a food service customer reported that the product appeared undercooked.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. FSIS is concerned about the safety of these secondary products because proper cooking of poultry is essential to eliminate pathogens such as Salmonella. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. FSIS is conducting effectiveness checks to confirm that these products have been removed from commerce.
