Volkswagen chassis, brake and suspension bolts may be incorrectly tightened

Volkswagen is recalling certain 2023-2025 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles because bolts on the chassis, brake system and suspension may not have been correctly tightened in manufacturing.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: under-tightened bolts in the chassis, brakes and suspension are structural fastenings, and the source states the consequence is a loss of vehicle control.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2023-2025 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, and 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles. About 546 units are potentially affected.

Certain bolts on the chassis, brake system and/or suspension — including bolts for the cross member, engine mount, control arm, subframe and rear brake carrier — may not have been correctly tightened during the manufacturing process.

NHTSA states that a loss of vehicle control increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the bolts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 25, 2025. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834, referencing recall number 42HX, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
