What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product (unexpected motorcycle movement could cause crashes) with no reported injuries or deaths. Per the severity rubric, a safety-critical defect without reported injury falls in the High category.

Plain-English summary

Indian Motorcycle Company is recalling certain 2025 Scout and Scout Sixty motorcycles because the gear position display may falsely show that the transmission is in neutral. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 123, which governs motorcycle controls and displays.

The defect creates a serious safety risk: when the display incorrectly shows neutral, the rider may believe it is safe to operate the motorcycle, but the transmission is actually in gear. This can cause the motorcycle to move unexpectedly, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

Approximately 4,926 motorcycles are affected. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 29, 2025. Dealers will provide a free software update to the Engine Control Module. Owners can contact Indian customer service at 1-877-204-3697 to arrange the update, or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
