Ford Bronco Sport Control Module Failure May Disable Drive Power

Ford is recalling Bronco Sport and Maverick models due to control module defects that may fail to detect low battery charge, potentially disabling drive power and increasing crash risk. Dealers will provide free recalibration.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The defect poses a risk of complete power loss in a vehicle, which could cause a crash. No injuries or deaths have been reported, placing this in the High category per the rubric for risk-of-harm recalls without reported harm.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles. The body control module and power train control module in these vehicles may fail to detect changes in the 12-volt battery state of charge.

If the modules do not detect a low battery charge, the vehicle may lose electrical accessories such as hazard lights, or lose drive power entirely. Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact their Ford dealer to schedule a free recalibration of the body control module and power train control module. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 4, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
