2023 Jeep Compass Instrument Display Brightness Cannot Be Adjusted

Certain 2022-2023 Jeep Compass vehicles have a software error that prevents the instrument panel brightness from being adjusted. Drivers may not clearly see critical safety information like speed and warning lights.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The source documents a risk-of-harm condition (dim display may prevent visibility of critical safety information) with no reported injuries or illnesses. The hazard is theoretical rather than actual, and the defect is readily corrected with a free software update, fitting the High severity category.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 Jeep Compass vehicles. The body control module (BCM) software contains an error that prevents the instrument panel cluster (IPC) brightness from being adjustable.

The consequence is that an instrument panel that cannot be brightened may fail to clearly display critical safety information, such as the speedometer and warning lights. This increases the risk of a crash. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101, "Control and Displays."

Owners should contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 to schedule the free software update. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 29, 2023.
