2022-2023 Altec Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices recalled for electrical fire risk

Altec is recalling certain 2022-2023 Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices due to missing circuit breakers on AC power inverters, which could cause electrical fires. Altec will install the circuit breaker free of charge.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Missing circuit breaker on power inverter creates electrical fire risk. No deaths, injuries, or incidents reported, so this qualifies as a theoretical risk-of-harm product recall, scoring 3 per the rubric.

Plain-English summary

Altec Industries is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 model Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices. The affected models include AT, TA, L44, L45, LR8, AA, AM, and AN aerial devices, and DH, DL, DM, and DT digger derricks, totaling approximately 535 units.

The power inverter in these units converts electrical DC power to AC power but may have been installed without a circuit breaker to protect the AC output circuit. Without this protective circuit breaker, the AC circuit could overheat and create a fire risk.

Altec will install a 20-amp circuit breaker in the AC circuit free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 21, 2023. To arrange the repair, contact Altec's customer service at 1-877-462-5832. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information.
