Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023 Toyota Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, and Sequoia Hybrid vehicles. The spare tire carrier assembly on these vehicles may have insufficient welds on the steel chain that secures the spare tire to the underside of the vehicle.
If the welds are insufficient, the chain can break, allowing the spare tire to detach from the vehicle. This increases the risk of a crash.
Owners should contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331 to schedule a free replacement of the spare tire carrier assembly at an authorized Toyota dealership. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed on August 14, 2023. Alternatively, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
