2023 Forest River Cherokee travel trailer recalled for insufficient safety chains

Forest River is recalling certain 2023 Cherokee travel trailers because the safety chains may be insufficient for the trailer's rated weight capacity, increasing risk of detachment and crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Structural defect in safety chains with potential for serious harm (trailer detachment and crash risk), but no reported incidents. Meets the rubric criterion of 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'

Plain-English summary

Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 Cherokee CKT36FBOP travel trailers. The safety chains on these trailers may be insufficient to support the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as listed on the federal placard.

If the safety chains are inadequate for the vehicle's rated weight, the trailer may detach from the towing vehicle. A detached trailer significantly increases the risk of a crash.

All affected vehicles are currently in dealer inventory and no owner notification letters have been sent. Owners may contact Forest River Customer Service at 1-260-499-2100 (recall number 89-1618) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for information. Dealers will install a new Federal Placard at no charge.
