General Motors recalls 2017-2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicles. After a crash with pretensioner deployment, pretensioner exhaust may ignite carpet near the B-pillar, creating a fire hazard.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Structural vehicle defect affecting the crash protection system with documented fire hazard. While no fires or injuries have been reported, the design defect is real and documented, and vehicle fires create serious injury risk.

Plain-English summary

General Motors is recalling certain 2017-2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicles. The recalled vehicles have a design defect involving the seat belt pretensioner system and nearby carpet.

In a crash scenario where the seat belt pretensioner deploys, the pretensioner exhaust may ignite carpet fibers near the B-pillar. This could result in a vehicle fire, which increases the risk of injury.

Approximately 111,242 vehicles are affected. Owner notification letters were mailed between January 23, 2023 and April 25, 2023.

To remedy this issue, dealers will install metal foil at the carpet near the pretensioner exhaust and install a pretensioner cover as necessary, free of charge. Owners should contact their Chevrolet dealer or call 1-800-222-1020 to schedule service.
