2022 Ford Maverick brake lights may illuminate unintended due to ABS defect

Ford is recalling 2022 Maverick vehicles with an ABS module defect that may cause brake lights to illuminate without driver input. This could confuse other drivers and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: No reported injuries or deaths; the consequence is theoretical (potential driver confusion increasing crash risk). Per the rubric, this is a risk-of-harm product without reported injury, scoring 3 (High).

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2022 Maverick vehicles due to a defect in the Antilock Brake System (ABS) module. Under certain circumstances, the ABS module may cause the brake lights to illuminate even when the driver is not applying the brakes.

These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, which sets requirements for lamps and reflective devices. Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Approximately 11,239 units are affected. Ford will update the ABS module software at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 9, 2022. Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (Ford recall number 22C24) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
