Ford Recalls 2021-2022 F-150 Trucks for Driveshaft Fracture Risk
Ford is recalling 2021-2022 F-150 vehicles because underbody insulators may loosen and damage the driveshaft, potentially causing loss of vehicle control.
What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).
The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveshaft fracture) that can cause loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2021-2022 F-150 vehicles due to a defect in the underbody heat and noise insulators. These insulators may loosen and come into contact with the aluminum driveshaft, which can damage the driveshaft and cause it to fracture.
A fractured driveshaft can result in a loss of drive power or a loss of vehicle control if the driveshaft contacts the ground. Additionally, unintended movement could occur while the vehicle is parked if the parking brake is not engaged. Any of these scenarios increases the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect and repair the driveshaft, as necessary, and properly attach the underbody insulators free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 1, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
