2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class passenger seat limiter safety recall
Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2020-2021 E-Class and AMG models due to a passenger seat limiter defect that may allow the seat to position too close to the frontal airbag, increasing injury risk during airbag deployment.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle safety defect where no injuries have been reported. The hazard is theoretical—risk of injury in the event of airbag deployment—placing it in the 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported' category per the severity rubric.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2020 and 2021 model year E350, E450, E450 Wagon, E63S AMG, and E53 AMG vehicles. The passenger seat limiter may malfunction and allow the seat to be positioned too close to the frontal passenger airbag.
If the frontal passenger airbag deploys in a crash, a seat positioned too close to the airbag increases the risk of injury to the passenger. No injuries or illnesses have been reported.
MBUSA will notify owners and dealers will recalibrate the passenger seat limiter free of charge. The recall began April 29, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
