High Altitude Trailer XT50 Recalled for Rear Swing Arm Weld Failure

High Altitude Trailer is recalling 2019-2020 XT50 trailers with retrofitted rear swing arm spare tire carriers because a weld may fail, causing the tire to separate and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a component may break away from the frame, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.

Plain-English summary

High Altitude Trailer Co, LLC (HATC) is recalling certain 2019-2020 XT50 trailers that were retrofitted with a black rear swing arm spare tire carrier. The recall addresses a potential defect in the weld on the retrofitted rear swing arm bracket.

If the weld on the rear swing arm spare tire carrier bracket fails, the rear swing arm, spare tire, and any other attached items may break away from the trailer frame. This separation increases the risk of a crash.

HATC has notified owners, and dealers will add reinforcing welds along the top seam of the swing arm bracket and trailer frame free of charge. For customers not in the immediate region, the manufacturer will coordinate with a local welding repair shop to add the welds and reimburse the shop directly. The recall began July 28, 2020. Owners may contact HATC customer service at 1-720-391-6685 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
