Plain-English summary
Altec Industries, Inc. is recalling certain 2017-2020 AT200A, AT235, AT37-G, AT40-G, and AT41/48M Aerial Devices. These vehicles are mounted on Ford F-350, F-450, or F-550 chassis equipped with a gas engine and a Chelsea 249 Power Take-Off (PTO). The recall affects approximately 2,550 units.
The defect involves the PTO potentially leaking oil onto the exhaust heat shield thermal blanket. When oil is absorbed by the thermal blanket, there is an increased risk of fire due to exposure to hot engine components.
Altec will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the heat shield with a redesigned version. Additionally, dealers will install plumbing to relocate a pressure switch and install hoses with improved routing to increase their distance from heat sources. This repair is free of charge. The recall began on September 8, 2020. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
