Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. is recalling one 2019 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive vehicle. The recall addresses a defect in the high-voltage battery main cell conductors where a welded joint may detach. This detachment can interrupt electrical contact, resulting in sudden battery failure, or cause an electrical arc that ignites inside the battery cells.
If the high-voltage battery fails, the vehicle may stall, which increases the risk of a crash. Additionally, an electrical arc inside the battery increases the risk of a fire. The recall began on May 8, 2020.
Mercedes-Benz USA will notify owners, and a dealer will replace the high-voltage battery free of charge. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
