Motorcar Parts Recalls Duralast Brake Master Cylinders for Volkswagen Models

Motorcar Parts of America is recalling specific Duralast brake master cylinders for Volkswagen vehicles due to a defect that may cause loss of braking.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The defect involves a structural failure of the brake master cylinder that can lead to complete loss of braking, which is a structural vehicle defect with significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

Motorcar Parts of America, Inc. (MPA) is recalling certain Duralast NM4222 and NM55381 brake master cylinders sold as aftermarket replacement parts. These components were intended for 2012-2017 Volkswagen Beetle, 2005-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2007-2010 Volkswagen Jetta GLI vehicles.

The recall is due to insufficient crimping of the aluminum housing, which may allow the master cylinder piston to pop out. If this occurs, it can result in a complete loss of braking or unintended brake application, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners may initially notice brake fluid leaking onto the vacuum booster or a change in brake pedal travel and feel.

Owners should contact MPA customer service at 1-833-758-0239 or email [email protected]. MPA will direct owners to take the component to an AutoZone store to return the recalled Master Cylinder for a full refund. Exchanges for replacement Master Cylinders can occur after October 1, 2020. The recall began on August 28, 2020.
