Vitro Recalls Aftermarket Rear Window Glass for Non-Compliant Fragment Size

Vitro is recalling 47,366 aftermarket rear window glass units for various vehicles because improper tempering may result in large fragments that increase injury risk in a crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, as the source states larger glass pieces may strike occupants, increasing the risk of injury, but does not report actual injuries or fatalities.

Plain-English summary

Vitro Automotriz, S.A. de C.V. is recalling 47,366 units of aftermarket replacement rear window glass (backlites) sold for use in various Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu, Oldsmobile, Buick, Saab, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Volkswagen, Mazda, Mercury, Pontiac, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Jeep, Navistar, International, Saturn, Scion, Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Hyundai vehicles. The affected vehicles include passenger cars, pick-up trucks, SUVs, and heavy-duty vehicles.

The recall is due to improper tempering of the glass. If the rear window glass breaks, the resulting fragments may not be small enough, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 205, "Glazing Materials." In the event of a crash, these larger glass pieces may strike vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall began on November 18, 2019. Vitro will notify distributors and owners and replace the rear window glasses free of charge. Owners may contact Vitro customer service at 1-818-863-1524 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Vitro's number for this recall is DOT287.
