Honda Recalls 2015-2016 Fit Vehicles Due to Airbag Puncture Risk

Honda is recalling 25,367 2015-2016 Fit LX vehicles because defective rear grab handle brackets may puncture side curtain airbags, increasing injury risk in a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (improperly manufactured brackets) that compromises safety systems (airbags), increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Fit LX-trim vehicles manufactured between April 11, 2014, and July 02, 2015, that are not equipped with a sunroof. The recall affects 25,367 vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the rear grab handle brackets were not manufactured properly. As a result, the brackets may puncture the side curtain air bags upon their deployment. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection," and number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

If the side curtain air bags are punctured upon deployment, outboard seat occupants may be at a higher risk of injury during a crash. Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear grab handle bracket free of charge. The recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
