Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 Recall for Battery Cable Fire Risk

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2018 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 transit buses because a battery cable may rub against a bracket, potentially causing a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (battery cable routing) that creates a risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury or property-damage reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2018 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 transit buses equipped with two 8D batteries. The recall addresses a defect where the battery power cable may not have adequate clearance between the cable and the battery hold-down bracket.

As a result of this lack of clearance, the cable can rub against the bracket, which may damage the cable. The damaged battery cable may electrically arc, increasing the risk of a fire.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the battery cable routing and reroute it as necessary to provide proper clearance, free of charge. DTNA issued an interim notification to owners on August 6, 2018, and the recall began on October 3, 2018. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
