Mercedes-Benz Recalls SUVs for Active Curve System Fire Risk
Mercedes-Benz is recalling specific 2012-2017 SUVs because oil in the Active Curve System may leak and cause a fire if the level is low.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard where leaking oil can ignite in the presence of an ignition source, which aligns with the rubric criteria for significant injury or property-damage reports (Score 4).
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. is recalling certain 2012-2017 ML, GL, GLE, and GLS models equipped with the Active Curve System (ACS). The affected vehicles include the ML350, ML550, ML63 AMG, ML400, GL350, GL450, GL550, GL63 AMG, GLE350, GLE400, GLE450, GLE63 AMG, GLE63S AMG, GLS350d, GLS450, GLS550, and GLS63 AMG.
In certain driving conditions, if the oil level in the ACS reservoir is below the minimum level, the oil may foam and leak out of the vent holes in the reservoir cap. The leaking oil in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
The recall began on August 30, 2018. Dealers will correct the oil level as necessary and replace the reservoir sealing cap to prevent oil foam from leaking out, free of charge. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
