What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in 'serious injury or death' due to metal fragments striking occupants, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury reports or potential for serious harm.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2009 Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen vehicles manufactured between January 17, 2007, and December 18, 2008, as well as 2010 RAM 3500 cab chassis manufactured between September 25, 2009, and February 1, 2010. These vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion. Over time, this moisture can cause the inflator to rupture.

In the event of a crash that necessitates the deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the rupturing inflator could release metal fragments that strike the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. This recall covers vehicles that were accidentally excluded from a previous recall (15V-313).

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator free of charge. The recall began on January 11, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
