BMW Recalls G650GS Motorcycles for Engine Stall Risk

BMW is recalling 2013-2016 G650GS and 2013-2015 G650GS Sertao motorcycles because an engine control unit software issue may cause the engine to stall during operation, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (motorcycle stalling) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 BMW G650GS motorcycles manufactured between March 8, 2013, and October 12, 2015, and 2013-2015 BMW G650GS Sertao motorcycles manufactured between March 8, 2013, and May 23, 2014. The recall involves 1,398 vehicles.

The affected motorcycles may stall during operation due to an engine control unit (ECU) software issue. If the engine stalls during operation, it increases the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the ECU software free of charge. The recall was expected to begin November 18, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. This recall supersedes recall 15V-537, and motorcycles repaired under that previous recall need to have their software updated again as part of this campaign.
