Cheetah Chassis Recalls Trailers Due to Spring Brake Valve Defect

Cheetah Chassis is recalling specific 2014-2016 trailers because improperly machined spring brake valves may delay braking, increasing the risk of the trailer rolling away.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (braking system) that increases the risk of a crash or injury, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Cheetah Chassis Corporation is recalling certain 2014-2016 trailers, including Extendable Chassis, Straight Frame Chassis, Gooseneck Chassis, Flatbed, Bridgemaster Chassis, and Curtain Side Flatbed models. The recall involves 289 units equipped with certain Bendix SR5 spring brake valves that may have been improperly machined.

This defect could cause a delay in the application of the spring brakes while parking. If the spring brakes are delayed, the trailer may roll away after it has decoupled from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Cheetah will contact owners to provide a remedy kit, complete with instructions, to repair any affected SR-5 trailer relay valves free of charge. The recall began on August 22, 2016. Owners may contact Cheetah Customer Service at 1-570-752-2709 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
