Forest River is recalling 2013-2016 XLR toyhaulers because improperly seated axle bolts may allow the axle to shift, increasing the risk of a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle bolt) that can lead to loss of vehicle control and a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 XLR toyhaulers manufactured between August 28, 2012, and November 5, 2015. The recall addresses a defect where the axle equalizer knurled bolt (axle shackle locating bolt) may not be properly seated in the chassis axle hanger.

If the equalizer knurled bolt is not installed properly, it may not properly secure the axle. This allows the axle to shift, resulting in a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will replace any equalizer knurled bolts and nuts that were improperly installed, free of charge. The recall began on August 16, 2016. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-642-0431 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
