Nissan is recalling 2013-2016 Sentra vehicles because a deformed seat belt bracket may prevent the front passenger air bag from turning off when a child seat is installed.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (deformed seat belt bracket) that results in significant injury risk to children in the event of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 Sentra vehicles manufactured between June 4, 2012, and April 9, 2016. The recall involves 645,898 vehicles.
The front passenger seat belt bracket may become deformed if used to secure a Child Restraint System (CRS). This deformation can cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to incorrectly classify the installed CRS, resulting in the front passenger air bag failing to turn off as designed. If the air bag deploys in a crash while a child seat is in the front passenger seat, there is an increased risk of injury to the child.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reinforce the seat belt bracket and reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) free of charge. The recall began on June 13, 2016. Owners are warned not to install a CRS in the front seat. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
