Chrysler Recalls 2015-2016 Dodge Dart Vehicles for Software Defect

Chrysler is recalling certain 2015 and 2016 Dodge Dart vehicles because a missing software backup in the powertrain control module may increase the risk of a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a software failure may lead to an un-commanded torque event, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2016 Dodge Dart vehicles manufactured between July 25, 2015, and December 16, 2015, that are equipped with a 2.0L engine and a manual transmission. The recall also includes certain 2015 Dodge Dart vehicles with similar equipment that were brought in for dealer service between September 15, 2015, and January 12, 2016.

In the affected vehicles, the powertrain control module that monitors engine torque output may be missing a backup layer of software. Without this backup layer, the control module may fail to prevent an un-commanded torque event, which increases the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Engine Control Module software free of charge. The recall began on March 25, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S10. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
