What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (helmets) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for products that may not adequately protect users in a crash.
Plain-English summary
Soaring Helmet Corporation is recalling certain Vega XTV 7400 helmets, sizes 2XS through 2XL, manufactured between January 3, 2011, and February 24, 2012. The recall involves 11,588 units. The affected helmets may not adequately protect a user in the event of a head impact during a crash, meaning they fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 218, "Motorcycle Helmets."
Helmets that do not adequately protect the wearer increase their risk of injury in the event of a crash. Since the specific purchasers of these helmets are unknown, Soaring placed a notification on the Vega website on May 4, 2016.
Retailers will exchange the affected helmets for a different Vega helmet or offer a refund, free of charge. Owners may contact Soaring at 1-425-656-0683. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
