BMW Recalls 2015 Convertibles Due to Air Bag Timing Error
BMW is recalling 2015 428i and 435i Convertibles because a programming error may cause the driver's front air bag to deploy at the wrong time, increasing injury risk in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bag) with a risk of personal injury in a crash, but no injuries or deaths have been reported, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2015 428i Convertible, 428i xDrive Convertible, 435i Convertible, and 435i xDrive Convertible vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between October 22, 2014, and February 27, 2015. A total of 2,067 vehicles are affected by this recall.
The recall is due to a programming error that may cause the driver's front air bag deployment timing to be incorrect. This defect means the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." If the air bag deploys at the incorrect time, there is an increased risk of personal injury in the event of a vehicle crash.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the air bag control module with corrected software free of charge. The recall began on May 11, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
