What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where air bags may deploy unexpectedly, creating a significant risk of injury or crash, which aligns with the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Avalon, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between December 28, 2001, and December 20, 2004, depending on the specific model. The recall involves approximately 1,006,849 vehicles.
The recall is being issued because electrical noise may cause a component in the air bag control module to fail. This failure can result in the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners deploying inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated. Inadvertent deployment increases the risk of injury or a crash.
Toyota will notify owners of the affected vehicles. Owners of Pontiac Vibe vehicles will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will replace the air bag control module free of charge. The recall began on August 24, 2015. This recall supersedes previous campaigns 13V-029 and 14V-147; vehicles that had a noise filter installed under those earlier campaigns must have the air bag control module replaced under this new campaign.
