The defect involves the transmission shift lever. When moved from reverse to neutral, the reverse gear may remain engaged. If the lever is moved from reverse to a forward gear position, the transmission may mechanically lock because both the reverse and forward gears are simultaneously engaged. This can cause the vehicle to unexpectedly move backwards even when shifted into neutral, increasing the risk of a crash.
