What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission mechanical lock) that increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2016 VN trucks manufactured between January 6, 2015, and January 15, 2015. These vehicles are equipped with certain Eaton Fuller FR-Series 10-speed manual transmissions.

In the affected vehicles, the reverse gear may remain engaged when the shift lever is moved from reverse to neutral. Additionally, if the shift lever is moved from reverse to a forward gear position, the transmission may mechanically lock because both the reverse and forward gears are simultaneously engaged. This defect may cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly backwards, increasing the risk of a crash.

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair the transmissions, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 21, 2015. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 or Eaton customer service at 1-800-826-4357. Volvo's number for this recall is RVXX1510.
