Fontaine Recalls Ultra LT Fifth Wheel Connectors Due to Locking Mechanism Failure
Fontaine is recalling Ultra LT Fifth Wheel connectors because the locking mechanism may fail, causing the trailer to detach from the tractor.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fifth wheel locking mechanism) that can lead to trailer detachment and crashes, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Fontaine Fifth Wheel Company is recalling certain Ultra LT Fifth Wheel connectors, part number SLTPL4000, manufactured between July 29, 2009, and May 27, 2013. The recall affects approximately 6,800 units.
Over time, improper coupling techniques may cause cumulative damage to the fifth wheel and its locking mechanism. This damage may result in the locking mechanism failing to operate or properly engage. If the mechanism fails, the trailer may unexpectedly detach from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fontaine will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fifth wheel with an Ultra NT model fifth wheel free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Fontaine customer service at 1-844-597-7393 or [email protected], or contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
