Hickory Springs Recalls RV Quad Entry Steps Due to Rivet Failure Risk

Hickory Springs is recalling specific RV quad entry steps because rivets may shear, causing steps to fail and occupants to fall.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a vehicle component that poses a risk of personal injury from falling, but no injuries or deaths have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company (HSM) is recalling certain RV quad entry steps, including models 24" RV Step 8x8 PRCD RAD, 24" RV Step 8x8 RAD, 24" RV Step 8x8 ST PRC RAD RGR, 24" 8x8 Quad PRCD RAD Boxed, and 24" RV Step 8x8 ST PRC RAD W/BRKT. These steps were manufactured between October 18, 2012, and February 14, 2014.

The recall is necessary because the rivets joining the second, third, and fourth steps may shear and fail when weight is placed upon them. If a rivet shears under occupant load, the occupant may fall, increasing the risk of personal injury.

HSM will notify the manufacturers that purchased the steps for use in recreational vehicles, and those manufacturers will notify the vehicle owners. To remedy the issue, the rivets will be removed and the step sections will be bolted together free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2015. Owners may contact HSM customer service at 1-800-438-5341 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
